The olives from which we get the precious pure extra-virgin olive oil, are protected against the dangerous flies (Dacus) by means of the so-called method “mechanical defence”.
We describe this method through the owner's words: “Our oil is peculiar, manufactured with the mechanical defence method, known by our grand-fathers too, who used to prepare a mixture of copper and white lime, and then they used to treat the olives with this mixture at the end of June ... And in fact the flies did not attack the fruits .... why? The technicians discovered the reason a few years ago. Three are the main actions that the mixture uses against olives flies:
- The leaves of treated olive trees get a colour close to light-blue and this leads to the fact that many flies leave these trees, since they usually choose the trees which seems stronger and greener; of course the olive trees in the surroundings which have not been treated with this substance, will be subject to a much more violent attack;
- The lime makes the fruits surface dusty and caustic and therefore, when the Dacus fly touches the fruit where it wants to leave its flyblows, it finds it rough and dehydrated, i.e. not suitable for the aim;
- If the flyblows were already laid before the treatment, since they are left on the surface, they undergo the dehydrating effect caused by the lime, thus making them infertile.
The result is excellent: with a proper treatment of this mixture, we are able to preserve all olives … without using a single gram of injurious substances.” |
